Youth Training

The Importance of Proper Running Form
To perform well at any sport, one necessary skill is SPEED!  Learning the basics and mechanics of proper running form is essential for top performance.  With the Top Speed Training program, young athletes are taught these all-important techniques to improve their game.

Top Speed Training is a specialized program to instruct youth on the proper mechanics of explosive speed, lateral movement, transitioning (changing direction quickly) and jumping.  The program is not sports-specific; the skills taught are fundamental to all sports.  As well, participants are taught proper ways to perform resistance training using mostly their own body weight.

Three key elements to the program are explosive speed, lateral movement and transitioning.  Explosive speed, also known as acceleration, is essential to every sport. Teaching youth the proper techniques for quick takeoffs and rapid acceleration gives them an advantage on the playing field.  As well, youth athletes can benefit from improving lateral movement skills in order to cut off opposing players and/or intercept their movement.  Developing superb transitioning technique is absolutely essential to blow past and defeat the competition!  The ability to change direction quickly will help with offensive and defensive play in any sport.

The following two photo's demonstrate outstanding running form from two youth athletes:

Kristin demonstrates excellent running form.  Her hands are open and relaxed, her arms are at a 90 degree angle from the elbow and rotating at the shoulder.

Phillip's running form is near perfect for someone his age (10).  His hands are opened and relaxed, arms bent at 90 degrees at the elbows and rotating at the shoulders, his torso is straight up and his forward knee is kicking high for extra drive.

Top Speed Training is a great program for youth from six years of age through high school (classes are arranged according to age groups).  We encourage parents to consider the program for children regardless of their athletic ability.  It is our experience that children who have not been involved in sports, or even those that are not athletically inclined, can benefit greatly from this program.

Youth Athletes and Core Training
Are you familiar with 'core training'?  How important is it for children who want to participate in sports?  More...

Strength and Conditioning Programs
At what age should my child start weight training?  How many times per week should he/she train?  Should my daughter be doing light weight and high reps, or heavy weight and lower reps?  There is no single correct answer to these questions!

This is where our training staff comes in.  Training requirements for children are much different than those for adults.  Research has shown that strength training can be effective for children as young as six years of age if done correctly and with proper supervision from an experienced trainer.

MyTime's lead trainer, Phillip Holden, has been working with youth athletes for more than 20 years.  As a Performance Enhancement Specialist, he has worked with children as young as 6 years of age up to collegiate athletes.  Through his Top Speed Training program, or customized personal training programs, Phillip can help prospective athletes of all ages excel at their game.

Understanding the balance between proper strength training and cardiovascular training is as important for the youth athlete as an adult.  The weightlifting techniques for a child will be very different than those for an adult, and must be carefully designed and instructed in order to be effective and safe.
